Trestle Glen Revival
OAKLAND, CA
The Brief
The owners of this 1927 Tudor home had lived there for seventeen years, raising three daughters and hosting frequent Sunday dinners, birthdays, and gatherings. Over time, the home’s layout began to feel cramped and outdated.
Rather than move, the homeowners chose to reimagine their beloved house through a thoughtful remodel that would expand gathering spaces while honoring the home’s original architecture.
The Transformation
Original oak flooring was preserved and patched where walls moved before being refinished with a fresh stain. Windows, molding profiles, and corner details were all carefully matched throughout the remodel, and living room beams inspired a new oak fireplace mantel.
The layout was reworked to improve flow and expand gathering spaces. Walls were opened around the stairway and dining room, and the kitchen was extended toward the family room. To gain additional space without exceeding building limits, the family room was bumped outward under the existing roofline, allowing the dining room to grow while creating an open kitchen and family room with access to the garden.
At the center of the kitchen, a large island comfortably seats the entire family. A baking area with a steam oven and prep sink sits beneath three windows, while a copper-lined coffee and tea station with retractable doors serves as both a focal point and a practical daily feature. Herringbone tile wraps the backsplash from countertop to ceiling—including the window openings—giving the historic pattern a bold, modern presence.
Custom cabinetry throughout the home ensures everything has a dedicated place. In the kitchen, a recessed niche displays the homeowner’s Blisshaus jar system, turning everyday storage into a visual feature.
In the dining room, a ten-foot built-in banquette with concealed storage creates flexible seating for large gatherings, complemented by a custom bar with decorative metal grill doors. A Barbara Barry pendant above the walnut dining table adds a sculptural focal point. Nearby, the family room features built-in storage for a turntable and vinyl collection, creating a relaxed space for music and entertaining.
Handmade Fireclay tile was used throughout the home, while cabinetry, counters, and paint were selected for their eco-friendly properties.
