Modern California Classic
Walnut Creek, CA
The Brief
This young family loved their neighborhood, but their home’s awkward layout, limited natural light, and dated finishes made daily life feel cramped and disconnected. The homeowners were ready for a major overhaul to create a light-filled home with practical materials and thoughtfully designed spaces for both family life and entertaining.
The Transformation
The layout was entirely reconfigured. The kitchen and living room were swapped, allowing part of the former kitchen footprint to become a proper foyer and a new laundry room. The home was then expanded toward the backyard to introduce a dining room, family room, back kitchen, powder bath, exercise space, and mudroom.
Divided-light black windows and new lighting fixtures now flood the home with natural light. Durable surfaces, including engineered hardwood floors, quartz countertops, and porcelain tile, ensure the home performs beautifully for everyday family life.
City setback rules required careful planning—flip-flopping key rooms and pushing strategically toward the backyard to capture the needed square footage. Where ceilings couldn’t be raised, volume was increased wherever possible, while glass interior doors and generous glazing help brighten the home.
