Glamour in Alamo

Alamo, CA
alamo-california-custom-kitchen-design

The Brief

The homeowners envisioned a dramatic yet welcoming living environment where architecture, luxury materials, and bold design moments come together to create an unforgettable space for living and entertaining. With soaring 17-foot ceilings, a massive steel window wall framing the view, and a two-way fireplace shared with the dining room, the home’s architecture already made a powerful statement.

The goal was to complement that scale with refined materials, rich textures, and carefully layered color, creating spaces that feel both visually striking and deeply livable.

The Transformation

The design begins with a restrained backdrop in the living room: airy paint, light upholstery, neutral tile, and an oversize textural rug.

A dramatic two-way fireplace is framed by a custom marble surround created from a single slab that was cut and mounted vertically to form a striking installation. Color and texture are layered through art, jewel-toned bespoke pillows, and tall magenta drapery panels that flank the steel window wall and emphasize the room’s dramatic height. A wall installation of nine brass sculptures introduces an additional sculptural focal point.

To create intimacy within the expansive space, the traditional sofa layout was replaced with oversized lounge chairs arranged in a conversational circle around an organic-shaped table, oriented toward both the fireplace and the view.

To create the show-stopping home bar, a 17-foot curved wall clad in textured stone forms the backdrop for contoured walnut shelving and custom curved cabinetry designed to follow the wall’s shape. A cedar ceiling and suspended glass pendant lights add warmth and sparkle to the dramatic stone backdrop. A circular quartzite bar top glows from below, while an inlaid brass channel within the curved edge adds a refined custom detail and discreetly conceals wiring. Brass cladding on the bar’s rounded front reflects light and pairs with a walnut toe kick that echoes the shelving behind.

The primary bathroom was designed as a serene counterpoint to the home’s dramatic entertaining spaces—a spa-like retreat for daily restoration. Full-size porcelain marble slabs are book-matched to form an architectural shower with a simple glass enclosure. A brass chandelier floats above the soaking tub, while floor-to-ceiling ripplefold sheers emphasize the room’s height and softness.

Suspended lighted mirrors positioned in front of the large picture window preserve the view while maintaining full functionality. A floating vanity with abundant storage and a dedicated makeup station keeps surfaces uncluttered while accommodating everyday routines. Accents include pop art and a carved Moroccan vanity stool.

Every project starts somewhere. A sketch. A fabri Every project starts somewhere.

A sketch.
A fabric swatch.
A strange idea that shouldn’t quite work, but somehow does.

I’ve been creating a new website to share not only beautiful finished spaces, but also about the process of how a design begins to take shape.

www.nicoleyee.com is coming soon.

Amsterdam’s charm lies in its constant motion…with Amsterdam’s charm lies in its constant motion…with canals flowing through, bicycles passing, and people strolling and engaging at outdoor cafes.
The architecture is beautiful and rich in character. We experienced a city that’s vibrant and full of energy despite record heat!
My son and I were there mainly to see the University of Amsterdam, where we are very proud that he was accepted into their prestigious psychology program. He has ultimately decided to take a different course of study but it was so impressive and we hope he’ll come back to study there someday.
We also saw the Anne Frank and Van Gogh museums, walked and biked across the whole city and took an evening canal cruise.
A highlight was a photography exhibit of Ed Van Der Elsken’s work at the Rijksmuseum. This inspired my black and white photos 😊
Until next time, Amsterdam. Thank you for the beautiful visual feast, sweet memories with my boy, and the creative boost I needed.
