Colorful Cooks' Kitchen
Oakland, CA
The Brief
Cooking has always been central to this family’s life. Long before they owned a home together, the homeowners were known for gathering friends into their tiny San Francisco apartment for home-cooked meals. Years later, in their 1926 Tudor home in Oakland, that same spirit of cooking and hospitality continues with their two teenage sons.
However, the existing kitchen—a 1980s renovation—did not support that lifestyle. The homeowners wanted a bright, hardworking kitchen filled with modern convenience, practical surfaces, and professional-grade equipment—while still reflecting their love of travel, art, and color.
The Transformation
The long, narrow kitchen was opened up and reconfigured to improve both light and circulation. Removing a dividing wall and reclaiming unused space from an adjoining bathroom allowed the creation of a dedicated baking area, as well as a pantry and laundry closet concealed behind a sliding barn door.
The design introduces a layered palette that balances freshness with character. Patterned porcelain floor tiles establish a subtle grey foundation, while navy cabinetry anchors each end of the kitchen. At the center, a vibrant orange island with a custom walnut countertop creates a warm gathering place—perfect for homework during the week and entertaining on weekends.
Throughout the space, design details echo the home’s 1926 architecture while introducing a modern sensibility inspired by Parisian bistros.
